Office 2019 Updates: Download, Install, and Enjoy

Keep in mind that installing and updating Office 2019 from a shared folder on your local network requires significantly more administrative effort and more disk space. For example, you have to keep track of when new builds of Office 2019 are available and then download the updated version of Office 2019 to your network. Downloading to a shared folder on your local network will always download a full copy of the updated version of Office.

download update office 2019

The location where Office 2019 looks for updates is specified in the configuration.xml file that you use to deploy Office 2019 with the Office Deployment Tool. For more information, see Deploy Office 2019 (for IT Pros). You can also use Group Policy.

To minimize the size of the updates that need to be downloaded, we recommend that you keep Office 2019 up to date. Office uses a technology called binary delta compression to help reduce the size of the updates that need to be applied to the user's computer. But binary delta compression is only available if you're updating from a recent version of Office. For example, if you're updating from the September or October version to the November version. But if you're updating a much older version of Office, such as from the June to November version, binary delta compression isn't available.

Office uses the concept of update channels to determine which updates an installed version of Office receives. The update channel is specified in the configuration.xml file that is used by the Office Deployment Tool. You should always explicitly specify the update channel. For more information, see Deploy Office 2019 (for IT Pros).

If you have Windows Server and Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) deployed in your organization, you can configure update settings for volume licensed versions of Office 2019 by using Group Policy. To do this, download the most current Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML for Office), which include the policy settings for Office 2019.

Microsoft releases security and quality updates for the Click-To-Run (C2R) version of Office 2016 and for Office 2019, which is exclusively C2R. These updates are released approximately once a month, usually on the second Tuesday of the month.

The following tables provide the update history for the volume licensed version of Office 2019, as well as the retail versions of Office 2016 C2R and Office 2019, with the most recent release date listed first.

This is crazy.... I've gone through page after page on Microsoft's website and I cannot find a source to download Office 2019 updates - they all end up going in a loop (seriously, check yourself). I have Group Policy set to force Office 2010 updates (retail, not volume) to a network path (I don't want MS dictating my updates). Has anybody actually found where to download the updates that will apply to Office 2019? Even downloading the entire image file from MS is the same version I downloaded last year.

Use the ODT to download the Office installation files and then point your client computers to that location to receive their updates. (Bydefault, clients are updated directly from the Office Content DeliveryNetwork (CDN).)

Microsoft updates its Office apps on a regular basis, and even though updates should download and install automatically, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll receive updates as soon as they become available. Also, if it happens that the automatic update service has been disabled, there's no way for your device to grab those new fixes and improvements.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to manually install updates for Office apps. In addition, we'll outline the steps to enable the update service is currently disabled, and the steps to make sure that you're running the latest version whether you're using Office 365 or Office 2019.

You can use these steps to update apps available through Office 365, Office 2019, 2016, and older versions. The only difference is that updating Office 365 apps will sometimes include new features and significant improvements along with security patches, while updates for the standalone version of Office (2019, 2016, 2013) will only include security and maintenance fixes.

Microsoft Office 2019 products use virtualization and streaming Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) technology. Microsoft uses the Click-to-Run method of downloading and updating Office 2019 products. The click-to-Run method differs from the traditional Windows Installer-based (MSI) method in the following way:

You do not need to download the whole Office product installer, and then update it to the current version with patches and service packs. With Click-to-Run, you download a single executable program that lets you initiate Click-to-Run streaming and application start processes. You can start using the product while the rest of it is being downloaded in the background to a network or HTTP share (the default location is Microsoft CDN). When you open an application that is not yet downloaded and installed, Click-to-Run immediately downloads it from there and installs it on the client computer.

By default, Click-to-Run products are updated automatically on client computers. You can disable automatic updating or invoke updating manually in the Office menu. During the update process, the Office updater service (ClickToRunSvc) connects to the network location that stores the full image of the latest version of Office and then downloads only the updates for the Office components that are installed in your environment. Thus the download size depends on the number of the installed Office components and the number of the Office files to be updated.

Patch Management Solution provides software bulletins for supported Microsoft update channels.Note: A separate bulletin is available for each date when Microsoft Office 2019 Volume updates are released. Microsoft Office 2019 Retail updates share the bulletin with Microsoft Office 365 monthly updates.

You use these bulletins to create a software update policy that delivers and installs Microsoft Office 2019 updates to the appropriate computers. You create the software update policy with the Distribute Software Updates wizard.

We have an offline environment with mixed Office C2R versions such as 2019 and 2021 both 32 & 64 bit. I'm trying to implement an update method using the Office GPO with auto update and a network shared folder for update location. I tried dumping all the update files for the above versions into the network shared update folder and it didn't work performing the update at the client level. I stripped the folder down to one version and one architecture; that worked at the client level with a successful office update.

Anyone got any thoughts on how to accomplish this update task? Anyway to make the GPO apply to one version/architecture of office? I thought of item-level targeting, but that isn't an option for the Office GPO. It's troublesome to have do this process one version at a time then change out the update folder contents.

It's my understanding that you need to use the Office Deployment Tool to download the updates based on each configuration.xml file you have. Then you can point the clients to the network share that you're storing these in so that they may update. Ex:

Then you'd use GPO to point the clients to \\server\share\office for updates. You could script the download of the update files (literally just throw those commands in a batch script after modifying to your environment) so things can still be automated. Since you had issues with storing multiple updates in the same share, you may need to download to multiple shares and use a script to check architecture, etc. and invoke the update through command line. ILT may work for this (not sure), but otherwise you could use security filtering if you need to apply multiple GPOs. Just a matter of inventorying Office to figure out which PCs need to point to which shares.

Microsoft AutoUpdate allows you to keep your software up-to-date automatically. AutoUpdate comes with Office, so there's nothing additional to install, and you can also use it to manually check for new downloads as well. This update to Microsoft AutoUpdate is part of Microsoft's continued effort to provide the latest product updates to customers. To receive future Office 2011 or Office 2016 updates, you must install this update.

My preference would be still Office 365 as you get updates frequently. Office 2019 is a software that is available as one time purchase. You can buy it from either online store or through volume license agreement. However you can expect only security updates for Office 2019 in future.

Here is a sample configuration file that you can use it with office deployment tool. In my case I used the below configuration file. This configuration file downloads Office 2019 32-bit version. In addition the previous Windows Installer versions of Office are removed as part of the installation process.

In this step we will download Office 2019 installation files. Run the command prompt as administrator. Change the path to Office 2019 folder. Type the command setup.exe /download config.xml and press enter.
